Mendocino motor is a solar-powered magnetically-levitated electric motor. Watch how light is turned into motion with this magnetically levitating electric motor.
About Mendocino Motor:
- According to Wikipedia definition, The motor consists of rotor block, which has two sets of windings and a solar cell attached to each side with the shaft placed in the middle. The shaft is positioned horizontally and has a magnet at each end. These magnets provide levitation by repelling magnets in a base under the motor.Working of this project:
- First of all build the base that holds magnets and provides a bearing point for the motor. Then, wind the motor coils and solder the solar cells with them. When the light strikes the solar cells, they generate the electric current and thus, energizing the motor windings. This produces magnetic field which interacts with the field of the magnet under the rotor. This interaction causes the rotor to turn. As the rotor rotates, the next solar cell moves into the light and energizes the second winding, creating a current in an opposite direction to the first thus maintaining the rotation. This process repeats as the motor spins.
