In the race to bring the first true octa core processor, Samsung, Apple etc. have been beaten by a relatively unknown smartphone maker. Chinese smartphone, UMI X2S, has taken the podium with the MediaTek MT6592 system on chip processor powering it. The device was reportedly showcased at an electronics fair in Hong Kong recently. A true octa core processor is that where all the eight cores can function simultaneously.
MediaTek’s processor is not the only octa core chip available for mobile processing at the moment, but, it was the first. When Samsung had announced its Exynos 5 octa core chip, it had raised expectations by quite a bit. But, it later turned out that the company had basically just put together two quad core chips, which were incapable of coming functioning together. Motorola also had come up with the X8 octa core chip, but this wasn’t a true octa core processor either.
UMI is a brand, which is basically unknown as compared to giants like Samsung and Google-owned Motorola, but it is reportedly a popular manufacturer in China. The UMI X2S is a high end Android-based smartphone recently launched by the company. Apart from the octa core chipset, the X2S also has a 12.7-cm (5-inch) full HD display along with 2 GB of RAM and a 13 mega pixel rear camera. It also has 32 GB of internal memory and is priced at around $245 (converted) in China. The processor clocks in a speed of 1.5 GHz.
