Different Methods to Calculate Resistor value

Resistor is a component that resists current to flow through the circuit. Resistors are probably the easiest component to test with a multimeter.

Through Color band:

Before you can test a resistor, you need to know its strength and tolerance. Resistors are color-coded. If you look at a resistor, one end should have a gold, silver, or white band. These 3 color coding gives error value ±10%, ±5%, and ±2% respectively. Turn the resistor so that this band is to your right. That band represents the resistor’s tolerance. Before I discuss tolerances, you need to know how to read a resistor’s values. You begin by translating the colored bands into numbers and recording those numbers. For the first and second colored bands, the values are as follows:
  • Black = 0
  • Brown = 1
  • Red = 2
  • Orange = 3
  • Yellow = 4
  • Green = 5
  • Blue = 6
  • Violet = 7
  • Grey = 8
  • White = 9
There is best and easy way to learn above color bands on fingertips. Learn the color coding in this way - BBROY 'G'reat 'B'ritain 'V'ery 'G'ood 'W'ife. Now, you can remember it and will never forget.

How to test Resistor through Multimeter:
  1. Turn the digital multimeter dial settings to Ohms (Omega).
  2. Insert the Red lead to V/Ohm point and Black lead to Comm point.
  3. Connect the leads to resistor to measure the value.
  4. You can connect leads to any end of resistor As resistor does not have any positive or negative end, so it won't affect on reading on multimeter.
