Resistor is a component that resists current to flow through the circuit. Resistors are probably the easiest component to test with a multimeter.
Through Color band:
Before you can test a resistor, you need to know its strength and tolerance. Resistors are color-coded. If you look at a resistor, one end should have a gold, silver, or white band. These 3 color coding gives error value ±10%, ±5%, and ±2% respectively. Turn the resistor so that this band is to your right. That band represents the resistor’s tolerance. Before I discuss tolerances, you need to know how to read a resistor’s values. You begin by translating the colored bands into numbers and recording those numbers. For the first and second colored bands, the values are as follows:
There is best and easy way to learn above color bands on fingertips. Learn the color coding in this way - BBROY 'G'reat 'B'ritain 'V'ery 'G'ood 'W'ife. Now, you can remember it and will never forget.
How to test Resistor through Multimeter:
- Turn the digital multimeter dial settings to Ohms (Omega).
- Insert the Red lead to V/Ohm point and Black lead to Comm point.
- Connect the leads to resistor to measure the value.
- You can connect leads to any end of resistor As resistor does not have any positive or negative end, so it won't affect on reading on multimeter.
